Description

This qualification is part of a suite of ESOL Skills for Life qualifications which are designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to communicate effectively through reading, writing and/or speaking and listening in their everyday life, study or the world of work. This course will also have additional elements included planning for progression and 2 week enrichment activities.  

Aim
The purpose of this course is to support speakers of other languages based in the UK to develop their English language skills. It focuses on language used in everyday situations as well as more formal contexts and helps learners to understand and use comprehension skills for the purpose of finding work and help them to read a variety of sources such as letters, advertisements, emails, and reports. The course helps learners read with their school-aged children and develop their skills which are essential for work, further study, access to public services, or just to function more effectively.

What you will learn
1. Understand and use organizational features to locate information eg Contents, index, and menus. 2. Read and understand the meaning of a range of different types of text. 3. Obtain information from short straightforward text. 4. Identify the purposes of different types of simple texts 5. Use language features to identify meaning in a short text. 6. Read and understand words and phrases commonly used in forms. 7. Relate an image to print and use it to obtain meaning.

Suitability and Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements this qualification, but learners are required to complete an initial and diagnostic assessment. These identify the appropriate level of study, as well as the learning priorities which need to be addressed within the level studied.

How you will learn in this course/workshop
- Practical activities -reading a variety of texts, answering questions related to the text. - Individual and group work-discussion of the topic as well as practicing exam sample papers. - Private study is very beneficial to the progression and development of this particular skill.

Accreditation, qualifications and assessment methods
This qualification is assessed via 3 controlled assessments which cover: 1. Reading 2. Writing 3. Speaking, Listening and Communicating Learners can either complete individual Awards in: 1. ESOL Skills for Life (Reading) 2. ESOL Skills for Life (Writing) 3. ESOL Skills for Life (Speaking and Listening) OR The full Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life covering reading, writing and speaking and listening.

Resources, materials and additional costs
All teaching and learning materials will be provided. You will need to buy writing paper, pens, a folder for completed work and handouts, and a dictionary.
