Description

This is a practical creative writing class for people to find the inspiration and motivation to write, whether for pleasure or for publication. The class content is informed by the participants interests. In a typical term we may cover a range of genres and techniques including short story,life writing (biography and autobiography), poetry, script writing and travel writing.  

Aim
To give learners skills to create and develop their own literary works, both factual and fictional

What you will learn
Participate in exercises designed to stimulate imagination Explore where ideas come from and the use of a writer’s notebook Create and develop interesting characters Explore narrative viewpoint, descriptive writing, and structure Use peer and tutor feedback to develop and edit work

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will : Generate, draft and edit a piece of poetry to completion Generate, draft and edit a piece of prose to completion Generate, draft and edit a script to completion Participate confidently in a workshop process of self and group analysis and critique.

Course/workshop level
This course is suitable for people who are embarking on further study of creative writing, writing as a hobby or for those wishing to advance their skills in English reading and writing.

Suitability and Entry Requirements
This is an introductory course, and no previous writing experience is required. You should be able to read and write fluently in English and be enthusiastic about the prospect of reading and writing prose fiction, scripts and poetry.

How you will learn in this course/workshop
Learning takes place in a structured, encouraging, motivating and inspiring environment. You will learn through in-class exercises and discussion with the other students and your tutor.

Accreditation, qualifications and assessment methods
This is a non-qualification course and will be assessed through interactive lectures, in-class assignments and writing exercises, peer and tutor feedback and discussion

How much additional time do you need to invest?
Ideally 1-2 hours per week

Resources, materials and additional costs
Ability to join via Zoom and use of a camera and microphone.

Your Tutor
Lisa McKinnon holds a BA in Theatre, an MFA in Acting and a Certificate in Creative Writing. She has over 30 years’ experience working as an actress, writer, director, and teacher, in both the USA and the UK.
